Vocabulary List – Week 9

  1. constellations -noun
    any of various groups of stars to which definite names have been given, as Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, etc.
    I sat back and watched the constellations appear in the night sky.
  2. circuit -noun
    an act or instance of going or moving around.
    I moved around in a circuit as I exercised my arms, then my legs, and then my arms again.
  3. consumer -noun
    a person or thing that consumes
    My brother consumed a whole loaf of bread.
  4. conserve -verb
    to prevent injury, decay, waste, or loss of
    I tried to conserve my energy so I didn’t get tired.
  5. prediction -noun
    an act of predicting
    My father had a prediction that I was going to pass my test.
  6. output -noun
    the act of turning out; production,  the quantity or amount produced, as in a given time
    I was worried about whether or not the machine could produce enough output for our needs.
  7. particle -noun
    a minute portion, piece, fragment, or amount; a tiny or very small bit
    When the bomb exploded, I was hit by a particle of metal.
  8. distinguish -verb
    to perceive clearly by sight or other sense; discern; recognize.
    I was able to distinguish the difference between a green sign and a blue sign.
  9. orbit -noun
    the curved path, usually elliptical, described by a planet, satellite, spaceship, etc., around a celestial body, as the sun.
    The earth has an elliptical orbit around the sun.
  10. observation -noun
    an act or instance of noticing or perceiving.
    My cousin’s keen observation prevented me from falling into a hole in the woods.
  11. discern -verb
    to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect; see, recognize, or apprehend.
    I could discern that my brother was upset about something.
  12. convection -noun
    the transfer of heat by the circulation or movement of the heated parts of a liquid or gas.
    A tornado is an example of what happens when the difference in hot and cold elements in the air can build up winds into a cyclone.
  13. revolution -noun
    an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.
    The angry citizens were in the midst of a revolution and found the king and beheaded him.
  14. dexterity -noun
    skill or adroitness in using the hands or body; agility.
    Aaron showed off his dexterity as he climbed up on the fence and balanced on one foot to pick an apple.
  15. corrosive -adjective
    having the quality of corroding or eating away; erosive.
    I spilled a corrosive liquid on the ground.
  16. savvy -adjective
    shrewdly informed; experienced and well-informed; canny
    He was a savvy card player and kept his cards close to his chest.
  17. toiling -verb
    to engage in hard and continuous work; labor arduously:
    I was toiling in the garden when the ice cream truck arrived.
  18. ambled -verb
    to go at a slow, easy pace; stroll; saunter
    I ambled toward my destination.
  19. verdant -adjective
    green with vegetation; covered with growing plants or grass
    I was walking in a verdant field and sneezed as the pollen entered my nose.
  20. fortuitous -adjective
    happening or produced by chance; accidental
    It was a fortuitous encounter that I met the girl of my dreams at the party.
