  1. scowl verb 
    to draw down or contract the brows in a sullen, displeased, or angry manner.
    Ryan scowled at his brother as he entered the room.
  2. lilt noun
    rhythmic swing or cadence
    Her voice had a very nice lilt to it.
  3. clandestine adjective
    characterized by, done in, or executed with secrecy or concealment, especially for purposes of subversion or deception; private or surreptitious
    I met the spy in a clandestine location.
  4. slogging verb
    to walk heavily, to work hard, to hit hard, as in boxing or cricket; slug.
    I slogged through the giant pile of homework in an attempt to finish it early.
  5. furtive adjective
    taken, done, used, etc., surreptitiously or by stealth; secret
    Aaron gave a furtive look to his partner as he pocketed the coin.
  6. clamor noun
    a loud uproar, as from a crowd of people
    I was hit with a loud clamor as I opened the door and found 100 people all talking at once.
  7. optimism noun
    the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world.  Looking favorably on something.
    I was optimistic about my chances of doing well on my test.
  8. edifice noun
    a building, especially one of large size or imposing appearance.
    Spider man climbs the edifice just like a spider does.
  9. fusillade noun
    a simultaneous or continuous discharge of firearms.
    Under a fusillade of gunfire, the man was shot as he crested the hill.
  10. emissary noun
    a representative sent on a mission or errand
    My cousin Brian was sent as an emissary to negotiate the business deal.
  11. adverse adjective
    unfavorable or antagonistic in purpose or effect
    I worry about the adverse affects of that drug.
  12. ominous adjective
    portending evil or harm; foreboding; threatening; inauspicious
    The cracking of tile was an ominous sound as I explored the building.
  13. sinister adjective
    threatening or portending evil, harm, or trouble; ominous
    My friend gave a sinister laugh as he thought of adding hot peppers to the dessert.
  14. rune noun
    A character in certain ancient alphabets. Something written in such characters.
    My friend enjoyed deciphering the runes that were on the cave wall.
  15. runesmith noun
    a student, writer, transcriber, or decipherer of runes
    My friend studied the reading and writing of ancient languages a long time before he could called himself a runesmith.
  16. indignation noun
    strong displeasure at something considered unjust, offensive, insulting, or base; righteous anger.
    I was indignant when I heard that my son’s teacher wasn’t qualified to teach what she was teaching.
  17. decimate verb
    to destroy a great number or proportion of
    The American Indian population was decimated by the settlers in the 17 and 1800s.
  18. lodestone noun
    a stone that acts as a magnet. Something that attracts strongly.
    The lodestone was used to create a field compass.
  19. comestible noun
    article of food
    (adjective) edible; eatable.
    Tell Sandra to gather all the comestibles in a backpack for our picnic.
  20. perspire verb
    to secrete a salty, watery fluid from the sweat glands of the skin, especially when very warm as a result of strenuous exertion; sweat.
    My friend began to perspire as we started to jog in the heat.
