Vocabulary List – Week 10

  • transfer – verb
    to convey or remove from one place, person, etc., to another
    I transferred the plate from the dishwasher to the cabinet.
  • transform – verb
    to change in form, appearance, or structure; metamorphose.
    I transformed the ingredients into a wonderful cheesecake.
  • temperature – noun
    a measure of the warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some standard value.
    I took the temperature of the water and realized it was freezing.
  • variable – adjective
    capable of being varied or changed; alterable
    My brother’s moods are really variable – they depend greatly on how early in the morning it is.
    table – verb
    to lay aside (a proposal, resolution, etc.) for future discussion, usually with a view to postponing or shelving the matter indefinitely.
    I want to table that discussion for a later time.
  • texture – noun
    the characteristic physical structure given to a material, an object, etc., by the size, shape, arrangement, and proportions of its parts
    The texture of the pudding was gritty and totally disgusting.
  • transformation – noun
    change in form, appearance, nature, or character.
    After losing weight, my sister’s transformation from a grumpy recluse to a flirty party girl was shocking.
  • dedication – noun
    a formal, printed inscription in a book, piece of music, etc., dedicating it to a person, cause, or the like.
    I read the dedication in my father’s book and couldn’t imagine what he was thinking.
  • glossary – noun
    a list of terms in a special subject, field, or area of usage, with accompanying definitions.
    I wish my father’s book had a glossary, since I can’t remember all of those fancy terms he uses.
  • appendix – noun
    supplementary material at the end of a book, article, document, or other text, usually of an explanatory, statistical, or bibliographic nature.
    I read the appendix in the book my mother wrote and thought it was hilarious.
  • allowance – noun
    a sum of money allotted or granted for a particular purpose, as for expenses
    I held my hand out hoping to give my parents a hint that I was looking for my allowance.
  • particular – noun
    specific points, details, or circumstances
    I was looking for something particular when I said I was hungry.
  • specific – adjective
    of a special or particular kind.
    I was looking for a specific flavor of ice cream.
  • represent – verb
    to stand or act in the place of, as a substitute, proxy, or agent does
    I sent my brother to represent me since I was sick.
  • proxy – noun
    an ally or confederate who can be relied upon to speak or act in one’s behalf.
    My brother if oftentimes the person I look to as a proxy when I need someone trustworthy to do something I don’t have time to do myself.
  • premium – adjective
    of exceptional quality or greater value than others of its kind; superior
    My father always buys premium cuts of meat when he cooks for my grandparents because they are very picky eaters.
  • spectacular – adjective
    dramatically daring or thrilling
    The fireworks were spectacular to watch.
  • expectation – noun
    the act or state of looking forward or anticipating.
    My brother set himself up for a really high expectation when he guaranteed he was going to get first place in the upcoming race.
  • goal – noun
    the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.
    I achieved my goal of perfect school attendance.
  • application – noun
    a form to be filled out by an applicant, as for a job or a driver’s license.
    My cousin filled out an application for a job and they actually accepted it.
