Recipe: Onion/Hamburger Bomb Recipe

1010524_467590536658925_2121603107_nI learned to make this when I camped as a teenager. It is the perfect summertime/camping meal for a campfire or grill. You just take off the outer onion skin off, and chop it in half, as evenly as you can! Then you separate the pieces into matching pairs from the outside to the inside. They look big enough, but when you put them together there isn’t as much room inside as you might think.
For the meat balls

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 pound sausages [chicken/beef/pork/whatever]
  • 1 clove of garlic chopped
  • 1-1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup bread crumps
  • 3 slices of bread torn up
  • Pepper and salt to taste

Mix it all together with your hands
Step 1 – Once you have the meat mixed up, and the onions cut and matched up (at campsite,or at home in the back yard), you are ready to wrap.
Step 2 – The size of each meatball is going to depend on the onions. So just use your judgement and roll up the meatballs. Squish them between two pieces of onion.
Step 3 – Then wrap them each in foil with a twist at the top used one layer of regular foil and one of heavy duty, because they will be in the fire or hot coals. Be careful not to rip or poke holes in the foil, especially the outer layer. And its easy to do..
Step 4 – Try to put the ball in the hot coals.
Step 5 – Cook for about 8 to 10 minutes, flip them around, and then again in 8 to 10 minutes (or so). Obviously the time will vary with the heat of the coals, but the onion keeps the meat nice juicy..
