Recipe: Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce Recipe

996508_480362435381735_1298667386_nOkay, let’s admit it. Many of us Americans eat “Chinese” food. (I won’t belabor the fact that what we see here in the US isn’t really Chinese food – that’s for another post).

Of those people who enjoy the American version of Chinese food, many of us love that bizarre neon red glow of the sweet and sour sauce that is oftentimes served with certain dishes. Sometimes it’s called duck sauce, but suffice it to say – there are no ducks involved. It’s actually really easy to make at home.
INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder

Step 1 – Mix a little bit of the pineapple juice with the cornstarch to avoid lumps.
Step 2 – Combine all the ingredients in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil.
Step 3 – Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes or until thick.
